My Students

Most of us don't remember HOW we learned to read, but we certainly remember how we FELT about learning to read. When children have interesting books they can red INDEPENDENTLY, they feel confident and excited to learn more. This won't happen if every book they pick up is beyond their level.

I am getting ready to meet my 1st graders in about a month and a half.

It's my first time at this school, and my first time back in 1st grade after 8 years. We are one of 6 schools in a fairly small suburban district. We are a Title One school with a large ESL population. Despite a diverse population and funding cuts, our school has some of the highest test scores in the state because we have high expectations and encourage children to reach their highest potential.

My Project

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized program that allows students to take a comprehension test over a book that they've just read. They are able to set goals and earn points throughout the year. I love to see the excitement of little ones when they realize that they were not only able to read a book, but they passed the quiz, earned points and feel successful! Having a variety of lower level books allows them to choose the kind of book they read and enjoy being successful.

My students need 7 sets of easier level AR books for the beginning of the year in order to practice the skills they are learning and become independent readers.

Getting these books will help these 1st graders develop a positive attitude about reading that will help lay the foundation for reading success this year and in years to come. Thank you.
