My Students

Were you the child who HATED math when you were in school? I was and as a result, I have been taking classes to help teachers present math concepts in a new and different way. I am excited about what I have learned and need more tools to implement these practices in my class.

I teach an ELL (English language learners) Kindergarten class in Tennessee.

The majority of my students are Somali refugees and are working to adapt to a new culture and language. Math is something that is a constant no matter what language you speak and my students generally do well. However, after my training, I have realized that I can push my students harder in terms of language. I want my students to not only understand a concept but to be able to explain their reasoning.

My Project

I have requested a variety of manipulatives that will help my students develop their mathematical and language skills. Inflatable geometric shapes will help them touch and feel different types of solid shapes. The geometric shapes tub and geometric play board will allow my students to identify, sort and discover the faces of a solid shape. The apple fraction game will be another resource to use and show students fractions and the concepts of whole and part. In addition, the number trains and magnetic numbers will help students write numbers and create number sets.

Studies have shown that today's students do not have the mathematical skills needed to succeed.

I have learned so much during my conference and I am ready to go back and set even higher expectations for my students. I want my students to develop better mathematical language, think outside the box and be able to explain their mathematical reasoning.
