Awesome Author Adventure

My Students

I still remember being in 4th grade and discovering wonderful authors such as Wilder, Blume, etc. I knew that I could count on these authors to captivate my attention. I want to awaken my students' interest and broaden their horizons with the works of many different awesome authors!

My students live in an urban, blue-collar community in Indiana and attend a school that has a free/reduced lunch rate of 65%.

Most of them live with single-parent families, where they are not given many opportunities to learn or individual attention since that parent is working non-stop to make ends meet. Several of my 4th graders do not have much educational structure at home. They go home after school and are usually by themselves or with other siblings for much of the evening. No one is there to monitor homework time, take them to the library, or read with them. It is unlikely that they will have chances to read for enjoyment at home, let alone discuss reading with their parent and discuss their parent's favorite childhood authors. Therefore, I believe that the school and the teachers have to step in and provide as many of these opportunities as possible.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of, "On the Banks of Plum Creek" by Laura Ingalls Wilder, along with some supplemental materials to bring this story alive. I still remember my 4th grade teacher introducing this author to me, at which time I proceeded to read my way through the series and become hooked on the TV show. I hope to inspire my students in a similar way! I will use this book to take my students on a journey through Laura's eyes. Not only will this allow them to experience 1800's life first-hand, but I will integrate many Social Studies and Language Arts state standards into our lessons and activities. For example, one of our Social Studies standards is to learn about pioneer life, which is discussed throughout every chapter. As a culminating activity, we will watch a coordinating episode of the show and take a field trip to a living history museum to experience pioneer life first-hand, which is another opportunity that our students wouldn't get to experience on their own.

Won't you help my students take an adventure through Laura Ingalls Wilder's eyes?

Won't you help us learn state standards in an exciting way? Will at least one of the students become inspired to read more of the books in the series? Only time will tell...
