Bringing Chemistry to Life

My students need visuals to help understand chemistry and labs that are related to real life applications of Chemistry.

My Students

Have ever had someone explain something to you, and all you were thinking was could you just show me, because I don't get it? This is how many of my students feel when I talk about some chemistry concepts. Seeing is sometimes the best means to get the information across to them.

I teach under privileged, economically disadvanged English as a second language students in my high school chemistry class.

Many of my students have to work a job to help support the family. Vocabulary is a big issue with my students. I was trying to use a hot air balloon as a spring board, but realized my students did not know what a hot air balloon was let alone how it works. I was using words like conservation and filtration and bulging and these were not commonly known words. A picture is worth a thousand words is the saying, but physically seeing something in front of you is even greater to my students. Having a game to play or something to tangibly manipulate goes a long way, because you are taking the I do not know factor out of the picture and they can learn as they are experiencing it in the classroom.

My Project

I am requesting hands on materials, games and activity books that will allow my students to experience chemistry coming to life as they explore through playing games, seeing demos or physically maniplualting the objects. For starters the students will have the 3D model of the periodic table. Here they are able to assemble and disable the layers and discover the properties, the electron configuration, the trends and arrangement of the periodic table. Imagine if you were putting a puzzle together and learning the periodic table as you were assembling the puzzle. each time you put the puzzle together you learn something new that you did not notice the first time. The games are a simple way to make learning fun. When you play a game is it considered learning or fun to you? When you played a game last even a simple board game like scrabble did you learn a new word? This is the same thing only the students will be learning chemistry concepts as they play and have fun.

These items will bring chemistry to life and given it some meaning instead of just being words.

The students can not put something tangible with the words that I use. Again all I can say is that a picture is worth a thousands words and that you learn more when you are having fun while learning in the process. My students may be weak in vocabulary, but I can close this gap by showing illustrations. Think how much more meaningful vocabulary will be with a visual and more learning will take place.
