Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you read the newspaper? The newspaper is a media the students need to learn about in third grade. With the use of computers and TV to get current events and news, students do not see many newspapers around their homes.

My students come from low income families who do not have the money to provide extra materials or items for their children.

Most of these children get free lunch at school. To make matters worse for these students, the state of California keeps taking money away from the public schools so these types of added materials are not affordable for the students. These students have to suffer the consequences of a bad economy.

My Project

I want to provide my students an alternative way to learn science and social studies standards. Besides using the textbook to teach the lessons, I want to have them read current, standards-based newspapers on the same topics. When the students are done reading and doing the activities in class, they can take them home and read them to their parents and siblings. These papers cover reading, and writing in the science and social studies curriculum. These newspapers also allow students to learn about science and social studies communities that are found in their area of California. As an added benefit I can teach the students about the parts of a newspaper that is required to be taught in third grade.
