Field of Dreams

My students need a class set of the twelve 2010-2011 Mark Twain Award Nominee books and book tubs to organize our classroom library.

My Students

If you build it, they will come...to the library! Our class library has many books, but it is in desperate need of renovation and organization. With most of the books being passed down from my childhood collection, few of them appeal to my students.

I teach 20-25 fourth grade students in a Title I school in Missouri.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but most have one thing in common--they need love. Our community is a high need area with families that are constantly moving in and out of our school. Although education is not a priority for many of our families, my students come to school with a desire to learn everyday

My Project

This project includes 24 book tubs with labels and a book display stand to make the books in our library more accessible. These storage materials will help my students to find the books that they are looking for by organizing our library by genres and special interest topics. It will also help to develop more responsibility as my students will be held responsible for returning our library books to their appropriate spots when they are done with them. Also included in this project are 12 newly released books that have been nominated for the 2010-2011 Mark Twain Award, a Missouri book award voted for by students in 4th-8th grade. These books have been published within the last few years and were specially chosen for students by the Missouri Association of School Librarians. In order to vote for the Mark Twain Award, students must read at least four of the 12 books.

Reading is such a vital part of education, but developing a love for reading that lasts forever is priceless.

By helping us to rebuild our classroom library, you are creating an atmosphere that will encourage my students to pick books that they are interested in. Picking up a book is the first step. If you build it, they will come...to the library.
