My Students

High school memories last a life time. The journalism and yearbook students are dedicated to capturing and preserving those memories, but right now they can only capture on film those that occur within ten feet and stand still. They need a new faster-speed digital camera.

These students elect to take the journalism and yearbook classes.

This Iowa public high school has less than 400 students. Because it is a small school, most students participate in multiple activities and many are second or even third generation fans. They are very dedicated to the school and community.

My Project

These students want to preserve the memories of their high school years and the legacy of this community. With a fast digital camera and lens, they will be able to capture the state-qualifying 4x100 relay team, the excitement on a young girl's face as her cheerleader heroine flips off the pyramid, the flash of blue as the traditional graduation cap toss ignites applause. The students learn to tell the story of each student, each staff member, each group in this school. They learn the basics of good photography and the technical details of taking, adjusting, and using photos to tell the stories.

The students learn each group/person/community has a history.

A school is at the heart of a small town and its story is worth preserving. Twenty years from now, members of this community will look back at the photos in the yearbook and remember the part they and their families played in the community.
