My Students

As a special education student, my life changed when I discovered the arts. I am now a teacher of special education kids, and work in a very low income school. My students have the double whammy of being poor and having educational challenges.

We do not have the funds for a photography program here at our school.

We barely have books! I work in a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. The 175 students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds; over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. Most of our students are eligible for college. We are a 'special act' school district, meaning that all of our students have an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for a particular learning/social/emotional disability that they have. Our school is not in the home district of our students, and we are fully dependent on local/state funding. With the economic situation in our state, our budget fluctuates, impacting supplies first.

My Project

My students are very visual people. They live in a vivid environment (NYC) and have a hard time expressing themselves with words. Traditional visual arts (drawing, etc) tend to be frustrating for them, as many have poor motor skills, hand-eye coordination and, most importantly, very poor self-esteem. The idea of representing themselves in any way is frightening for them. It is my goal with this new photography program to give them not only the tools to feel confident in their personal representation, but also the means with which to help build their confidence, as well as the skills to possibly obtain work in an area that would otherwise be totally inaccessible to them. We absolutely do not have the funds in-house to supply these opportunities ourselves.

This computer is the keystone to this program; without it, the program doesn't exist.

We have the cameras, but with no room for a traditional photo lab (not to mention lack of funds to run it), nor the monies to provide lab printing, we have no other way to process the students photos. Also, the computer will be running with the best possible photo processing programs in the industry (fingers crossed!).
