Lego My Education

My students need Lego building bricks and a place to store them to start the new school year.

My Students

Perimeter, Area and Volume can be very confusing not to mention boring, as we traditionally teach them on a flat paper surface but imagine the difference as they become very real for students as they build and manipulate objects to represent using perimeter, area, or volume in real life situations.

As the special education teacher for the middle school and high school, my classroom is a hodge-podge of academic abilities.

Many of my students live in one parent families or with other relatives. 90 to 95% of our students are on free or reduced lunches and struggle, often times, just to have their daily needs met. They are eager to learn and make something of their life. Several of these students will be first generation college or career tech students. Many of my students remember what they can see and touch more readily than what they are taught from the textbook and worksheets.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to not only be taught in the traditional paper/pencil way but in a interesting, hands-on way bringing learning to life. The students will be able to figure perimeter, area, and volume while applying the information to situational learning, ex. students could design a concrete slab and a foundation wall using the building bricks. The students could be taught the importance of giving a good description by using the bricks to build what is being described or a castle while learning about the Medieval Period. The bricks could be used to learn about multiplication, fractions, estimation, or to build a balance. I really can not think of a subject in which the building bricks could not be used.

Your donation to this project will help revive creativity, inspire students to develop critical thinking skills, and bring an eagerness to learn back to the classroom.

Students won't have to ask "when will I ever use this?" They will be able to apply the skill as they learn it, which will help them clearly see the purpose for some of the things they feel they are forced to learn and will never use again.
