Super Science Sleuths

My students need 9 basic electrical materials in order to explore the fundamental aspects of electricity including static electricity, current, circuits and usage.

My Students

What is genius? Thomas Edison said, "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration." The need to work hard can only happen in a setting that provides resources. My students attend an inner city school which lacks much of the basic scientific equipment & supplies necessary to work hard and learn.

My students are special education students with emotional and behavioral disabilities, in grades 3rd - 6th.

They learn best by doing! They need to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills. One strong avenue of learning for them is to explore through hands on experiments. Once my students realize that they are going to be able to actually manipulate objects as they learn and explore, they take charge of their learning, collaborate with each other and start to demonstrate leadership qualities. To them, learning is FUN!

My Project

One of the subjects our students are researching and exploring in depth this coming school year is "Electricity". In order to study electricity, the students will need a variety of materials to manipulate. They will first discover what it was like to work by "candlelight" and work their way through solar power. The materials we are requesting include scientific equipment like: magnets, switches, wire, solar panels, sockets and lightbulbs, battery boxes, motors and resource books. These materials and activities will provide my special needs students the opportunity to explore, learn and demonstrate knowledge that will assist them as they progress in their scientific studies.

Without the opportunity to actually manipulate and explore these scientific concepts, the students will only read about the concepts.

This is not the most effective avenue of learning for them. It will be difficult for most to understand and incorporate the importance of electricity in their daily lives. If they don't understand electricity and where it comes from, how can we raise students, who look to the future for environmentally "green" and renewable energy.
