My Students

"Look at me, I can read!" Many of my students say this, but the truth is that they are only calling out words. The words have no meaning. They need to hear what good, fluent readers sound like in order to master their craft.

I teach in a high poverty area in Illinois.

My students come to school with concerns that no child should have to be worried about. School is a safe place for them, and books can provide an escape to places they can only dream about. I hope to encourage them to continue their love for reading. They want to break the cycle of poverty, and reading is the first place to start.

My Project

I want to have a listening station in my classroom so that struggling students can hear how fluent readers use voice as well as decoding skills to tell a story. So many times, my students are listening only to each other read in small group settings. This can cause a problem if the others in the group are struggling readers as well.

By donating to this project, my little second graders will have an opportunity to practice reading fluency.

This could be the key to a lifelong love of the written word. We may never know what they will grow up to be, but we all know that being able to read is the key to their future.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
