My Students

Many people say we learn by teaching. My students will be proving this throughout the year by giving whiteboard presentations.

My students are from a rural community attending a JR/SR high school of about 350 students.

These students come from a small farming and manufacturing community. My students have shown great potential in the science classroom and have consistently shown their abilities by outperforming state averages on the state exams. The majority of school funding comes via the state, which has caused the district to reexamine many areas of its budget.

My Project

I use a proven curriculum developed through ASU called modeling instruction. One of the developers describes the whiteboard process best: "The culmination of student modeling activities is reporting and discussing outcomes in a whiteboard session. This may be where the deepest student learning takes place, because it stimulates assessing and consolidating the whole experience in recent modeling activities. Whiteboard sessions have become a signature feature of the Modeling Method, because they are flexible and easy to implement, and so effective in supporting rich classroom interactions. Each student team summarizes its model and evidence on a small whiteboard that is easily displayed to the entire class. This serves as a focus for the team’s report and ensuing discussion. Comparison of whiteboards from different teams is often productively provocative. The main point is that class discussion is centered on visible symbolic inscriptions that serve as an anchor for shared understanding"

As the nation has recently been shifting its focus toward science education, the modeling program at ASU (http://modeling.asu.edu/) has been researching and developing proven classroom strategies for over 15 years.

As a new teacher, I am implementing this curriculum and have many financial challenges in doing so. This small donation of markers will allow me to devote my small classroom budget to other areas, while giving the students the most necessary tool to do these presentations.
