My Students

Do you remember your favorite year in school? Well, I'm making sure my students will say 2nd grade: when they planted a garden, cared for class fish and learned how to become awesome writers and readers!

My students are from varying social-economic backgrounds.

Some have come to school without basic school supplies. I have had emotional and social challenges in my classroom that are associated with poverty. Despite their economic situation, my students come to school eager to learn. 2nd grade is a critical time in their learning. I have to make sure that they have a solid foundation to assure they succeed in my class and beyond. I treat every student with dignity and respect, and guide my students to become successful learners.

My Project

I have chosen math charts that will reinforce the critical math skills 2nd graders have to master to succeed in 3rd grade. You should also know that when students enter our classroom, they immediately are in a creative, fun and engaging environment. I added a bubble aquarium because I want my students to learn to commit and care for living creatures. This basic nurturing will translate into empathy and respect in other parts of their lives.

While reading "Teaching with Poverty in Mind" by E.

Jensen, I learned that empathy, commitment, cooperation, patience and optimism are all skills that must me modeled and taught. Despite the situation my student's might have to go home to, when they are at school, it is a loving, amazing place!
