AP Lit Students in Need of Lit

My students need literature that they can read at home and discuss in class.

My Students

Many of my students have never experienced life outside of the city, and those that have came here to escape the war in their homelands. Some of their parents do not speak English, most do not have stable employment that enables them to purchase required reading texts for their children.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences ranging from the war-torn lands of Bosnia and Albania to the inner-city life they have never left.

We are a minority majority inner city school with a low socio-economic class, so many of my kids can not go purchase the texts that I would love for them to discover in my AP Literature course.

My Project

Othello is a tragic tale of misunderstanding, miscommunication, manipulation, and jealousy that teaches students incredibly valuable lessons ranging from the dangers of stereotyping others to the horrors one can commit out of sheer jealousy and desperation. For many students, Othello is one of the most accessible plays of Shakespeare, often inspiring them to read more. A Doll's House is a brief, accessible play that questions the expected roles of women long before the feminist movement. It provides students with an opportunity to truly consider societal norms and expectations and better understand why movements such as feminism were such a critical part of the growth of our culture.

These texts would provide students with an opportunity to read life-changing literature at home, allowing us to have time to discuss them both at length in class.

They would become part of our English department's limited library for future classes to read, learn from, and enjoy. The lessons that both of these texts offer students extend far beyond comprehending the language of Shakespeare or the lives of women in the 1800's, and into human nature and the consequences of one's actions.
