This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Incredibly energetic, bright high school students from NY, who love to read the "Young Adult Literature" genre seek provocative books to reconnect with their dormant (yet ready to explode) love of reading.

Last year I was smacked in the face with a reality.

Students in my school are bored and disenchanted with reading. The desire to "broaden the horizon" of the students comes in direct conflict with the very real fact that kids dread reading the "assigned book" and most times will not crack open the book outside of the classroom. These kids beg to read their own selection of books, but do not have the resources to go to Barnes and Noble or Borders to buy the latest teen best seller. "Miss, can we just watch the movie?" or "Can I just read what I want?" are questions often heard in my classroom. My colleagues and I discuss this dilemma, and nobody seems to have the answer. How did young people become so removed from the love of reading? My students really seem to want to choose their own books, and the budget is very tight. So, to solve the problem, I am asking for donors to help enhance our library.

My Project

The solution, in my opinion, is to stimulate the students' love of reading by letting them choose the books they want to read. When the kid are reading what they love, mostly on their own, but also once a week in class, their interest in reading will grow.

Your help will provide the kids with interesting, thought-provoking books -- books they would choose on their own if they had the resources.

Interestingly, there is no book store anywhere near the neighborhood -- certainly no Barnes and Noble in the vicinity. The students would have to have a chaperoned trip into Manhattan just to visit a book store. With your help we can bring the book store to them.
