My Students

Nervous! Excited! New school boxes and crayons! Think back to when you were a child getting ready for your first day of school. I remember packing my backpack with all of my new supplies and laying out my new clothes anxiously waiting for the big day to arrive.

My second graders are excited yet nervous, eager but a bit scared for that first day of second grade.

It breaks my heart when that little boy arrives with such a look of anticipation which instantly changes to disappointment when he realizes he does not have a school box with brand new colors and markers. I teach at a Title 1 school in Oklahoma and try to watch for back to school sales to buy extra supplies for my students but my pockets are only so deep.

My Project

My students deserve to experience that feeling of pride that comes from creating a work of art. As children open that box of crayons or markers, the possibilities are endless! Being able to ensure that each one of my students has the necessary school supplies is so important to me. Second graders are ready to take on the world with their new found independence. Part of becoming more independent is being more responsible for themselves, their actions, and their belongings. My students take such pride in their desk and their supplies. Something as small as a new box of crayons or markers is magical for a child. Colors versus no colors can sometimes be the difference between success and failure.

Special people like you can bring a smile to a child's face.

Crayons, markers, and scissors are the tools of a second grader. When they know they have the tools they are ready to learn. Thank you for helping my children experience success and it can all begin with a box of colors!
