This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you like Green Eggs and Ham? It is a favorite Dr. Seuss book with my kindergarten students! My class will love to use the new interactive, electronic reading materials for our classroom. They will enjoy Dr. Seuss' books electronically as they hear the words read aloud.

My kindergarten class is composed of many bilingual students; it is not unusual to have parents of these students who do not read/speak English.

We spend a lot of time in our classroom learning the alphabet letter names and their sounds. Many of my students have not attended any pre-school prior to kindergarten. My students love to hear me read stories to them; it is so motivating for them to learn to read. Many of them do not own a collection of books at their home. Our school celebrates Read Across America with Dr. Seuss' books each March. The students love hearing the silly rhymes in his books. The students also enjoy telling me about their favorite television shows and favorite Disney movie characters. I know my new class will fall in love with the new electronic, interactive reading materials! These new materials will give them feedback and build their confidence as they become emergent readers.

My Project

Imagine a kindergarten students' face lighting up while using the new Hot Dots Phonics Flash Cards for the first time (and many times following)! The Hot Dots Phonics Flash Card program includes six Hot Dot pens to be used with over 160 phonics lessons, including alphabet knowledge, vowel sounds, digraphs, and blends. The pen interacts with the child and lets them know if their response is correct (green light). Flash cards are always a common item found in a classroom, but the electronic flash cards will be so motivating! I can use the Hot Dot pens and phonics flash cards as a daily learning center. The TAG Reading system is the number #1 reading system currently for emerging readers. The TAG pen has a camera tip that allows the TAG to "read" the pages enabling the students to hear words and songs. It aligns with our reading curriculum for kindergarten, also. The Leapster Learning Game systems also provide motivation for learning to read using games and Wall-E, the robot!

What would you do with 29 bilingual kindergarten students to help them read?

I have been a teacher for many years and I recognize that technology needs to be added into my classroom. I have carefully chosen these age appropriate electronic, interactive materials to engage them in learning to read. We do love Green Eggs and Ham! Will you not help my kindergarten students learn to read by providing engaging materials to meet their many different levels of skills? We do love to read, too!
