Civil War Novels

My students need 25 leveled novels for small group reading on the Civil War.

My Students

Students learn and retain more information when it is taught to them by other students. By arranging students in small reading groups, we can cover a variety of perspectives on the same topic.

My students attend school in a small rural community in North Carolina.

I teach EC inclusion and have students that read and learn on a variety of different levels. It is important to challenge all my students and to set very high standards of achievement in the classroom. Students respond positively to the challenge, but it requires special accommodations in order to level the learning for all students. Small reading groups help achieve this standard.

My Project

These resources will be combine with other materials in the school to set up small reading groups that are reading level appropriate for all students. The books "Pink and Say" and "The Boys' War" will be used in centers that all students will read and respond to during our Civil War unit. Students will learn about events and situations encountered by a variety of persons during the Civil War and will make small group presentations to the entire class about their novel.

The Civil War is a topic taught in eighth grade social studies.

In order to offer interdisciplinary units, I have teamed with my social studies teacher to offer reading materials in language arts that supplement the social studies curriculum. This project will help me to offer appropriate reading materials to all my students. This project will allow all my students, regardless of their reading level, an opportunity to discuss and teach a unique perspective of the Civil War to their fellow students.
