BLUE - Reading to Learn Local History

My students need 25 copies of "Blue" by Joyce Moyer Hostetter.

Mrs. Millsaps Sugar Loaf Elementary School
Taylorsville, NC Grades 3-5

My Students

It is rare for fourth graders to prefer reading over recess. However, this happened with my fourth graders last year when I read Blue aloud to them. I would love a class set of this novel to use in the future with fourth graders as a literature connection for North Carolina history.

My school is in a rural area of North Carolina, and it has very limited resources.

There are approximately 270 students, and the majority of them come from working class families who do the best they can with what they have. Even so, our school lacks sufficient funds to supply new resources on a regular basis. I think it is important for these students to know their local history, and reading this historical fiction novel, connects them to the past of a nearby town in a way that really makes history meaningful.

My Project

There is so much I can do with a class set of this novel! In Language Arts, there is the potential for lessons on figurative language, voice, author's purpose, and much more. In 4th grade Social Studies, students study North Carolina history. This book reveals a great deal of history as it is set in 1944-1945 Hickory, North Carolina, and discusses World War II, President Roosevelt, segregation, and the polio epidemic that was present in Hickory. There is also the potential for students to learn more about polio (how it is contracted, treated, etc.). Finally, because it is written by a local author that students can connect with, students may even be inspired to become authors themselves!

This project will make a huge difference in the lives of my students.

It will open their eyes to an important part of their local history and inspire them to want to know more. What's more, I have seen students who despised reading learn to love it after having this book read to them. I would love to have enough copies of this book to read it together as a class. This is a powerful novel, and it will have a powerful impact on all who read it!
