My students need 2 lab kits and flash cards to examine a storm drainage ditch that runs through our school for a bioremediation project to stop erosion and upgrade water quality.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember playing in the local storm drainage ditch in your neighborhood as a kid? Mine do. "Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day.
We have a storm drainage ditch that runs through our campus and my students have elected to study its characteristics and improve its water quality as an after school project.
This is a suburban school with an ethically diverse population. Most of our students have never been farther than 10 miles from our school. In our studies of the water quality, we are doing monthly chemical analysis, and clean up project of the site; as well as storm drain anti-pollution labeling for the city, our after school science team was recognized by Staples as one of the best in the Southwestern United States.
My Project
These resources will enable our students to further evaluate the water quality and enable us to begin a bio-remediation of the storm water and will allow us to analyze what additional plants we will need to put into place to improve the water quality of this local drainage area. By looking at the animals that live in the current water and setting up different plants in the lab set up, we can see what will improve the water, and then implement a long term plan to carry it out. It will allow our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to see how they, using the scientific method, can take control and change their environment. By applying what we discuss in the classroom to what they see outside the classroom door they are getting a hands on lesson about the value of education. Your donation will allow us to capture their enthusiasm and build upon their work for this local project. It will show them that there is more to environmental education than picking up the trash left behind by others.
By making this donation you will help our students see that what they are learning will impact their lives directly both in the classroom and the world in which they live.
This is a project that they voted on to work on, and theirs to finish. It will better the quality of their lives, both today and for their future.
