My Students

Do you remember reading that first book you couldn't put down? Fourth grade students are ready to read books that capture their imaginations! No ordinary book will do, it has to be special! This is the year the students develop their unique "taste" in books, especially the boys.

Our school is a K-5 elementary school in Oklahoma.

We have a large percent of military students. Our school also includes the district's ESL/ELL population(mostly brought here by the military.) Our student population is quite diverse, as is the socioeconomic status of the students.

My Project

My students need their own copies of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a teacher's guide and package of worksheets. Students need to have their own copies of a book to be able to discover it for themselves! I can read a book to my students, but the students reading it for themselves is so much better! Reading the book silently allows them to read at their own level and speed. It also allows them to be actively engaged in the book, using their own imagination to create the scene and character's voices and personalities. When students are only read to, they tend to allow the reader to dictate the voices, etc. It becomes more like watching a movie than actually reading and engaging. I am trying to promote a life long desire for reading and to get students reading, they must have the book to take home and go at their own pace.

I have always loved this book!

I think every child can relate to wanting to win a ticket to go into a chocolate factory! The book also touches on poverty and I think it helps them to understand and have compassion for others. I want my students to experience the feeling of not wanting to put a book down!
