Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

PowerPoint presentations, the ability to see the setting of a story on a screen, seeing directions pop with color! My students have never experienced this because I have never had access to an LCD projector.

My students are a dynamic group of eighth graders who can make you laugh, think, or cry on any given day.

They fight for my attention and they beg to be taught, in their own way. They are primarily African American and the majority of them are struggling to read on an eighth grade level. The majority of the students come from economically disadvantaged households.

My Project

An LCD projector would heighten the level of engagement in my classroom. While everyday I try to be more dynamic, I find it increasingly hard to compete with the immediate gratification my students are thrown everyday. Being able to present instructions with color and interesting sounds would change the way my students perceive my lesson. Because I know my students would be more engaged in the lesson, I also know that their reading levels will improve, and their writing will become stronger. These things will lead to higher sores on state exams, which will ultimately mean getting into a better high school and then college. My students will understand how to navigate the computer, they will be able to present PowerPoint presentations, and they will become confident in their learning abilities.

An LCD projector means that my students have the same advantages that students sitting in a suburban classroom have.

I can teach a story and bring them right into the setting. I could take that one step further and Skype with a class across the sea. I could literally give my students the world and allow them to see themselves beyond the drugs and violence that many of them come from.
