My Students

The love of reading opens so many doors to young people, but having a reading disability often closes doors to age appropriate literature. By combining good Young Adult Literature with MP3 players for audio books you will help open the door to a love of reading for my students.

My students are high school students ages 14-17 who have a learning disability in reading.

Through the PTSA we have been able to start a young adult library in our classroom. For some of my students it is the first time that they have been exposed to age appropriate literature that their peers have been reading throughout their school career. This past year I shared audio books for the first time with my lowest readers and it opened an entirely new world up for them. They were participating in book clubs in our library with their non-disabled peers, participating in literature circles and discovering the joy of reading a book simply for the escape good literature can afford. The students have been borrowing my ipod with books downloaded for them, but this has been challenging as I have only one ipod, and as it's my personal property they couldn't take it out of the classroom. They have been excited to participate with non-disabled peers I am hoping to expand our audio library.

My Project

Through the addition of MP3 players, and classroom sets of books, my students will be able to continue exploring the joys of reading well written, age appropriate literature. With the addition of MP3 players I will be able to share audio books we already have with more of my lower reading students while with the hardbound books, all of my students will be able to participate in book clubs and literature circles while exploring issues around moral and ethical issues in the area of adversity and strength as examined through the use of young adult literature. I have also requested butcher paper as we will be creating body biographies as a means to explore inferences, & heart and soul of the characters to understand how various actions can create a variety of outcomes. Many of my students face a number of issues, from alcoholism in their families to homelessness, drug addiction to suicides of friends these books can help them see they are not alone in dealing with these very real issues

With the advent of young adult literature in my classroom library, my students, many for the first time, have begun to request more books.

As so many of you know, books can open up new worlds for students and I hope to instill a love of reading through this project. Even with the difficulties of sharing one ipod, my students have been reading with the assistance of audio books. Increasing our technology by a few MP3 players will increase the number of students accessing age appropriate books.
