Magical Spaces Chess Champions

My students need sturdy, mesh, coated tables with tie downs in order to play chess and board games outside at recess.

My Students

Can you imagine a three-acre asphalt school playground with nothing in play equipment except two basketball hoops? Recess is pretty boring with nothing to do but run around and potentially get into fights.

My students come from a neighborhood with a high poverty index and very little resources.

Our schoolyard leaves a lot to be desired - totally asphalt-covered, it leaves little for the kids to do except run around wildly. We have been trying to remedy this by working with architectural design students from a local college to design a better use of space in the yard. These students worked together with the college students and built mock-ups of the ideal use of space for our playground. The final design, for which we got a grant to begin, includes shaded areas with tables and benches for sitting, chatting and playing. Our state championship chess team would also like to practice at lunchtime at these little tables rather than sit in a hot lunchroom (a portable building in the yard). Our very successful chess program has allowed the chess students to travel all over the United States to compete, an extraordinary experience for them. They are talented students ready to take on any comers!

My Project

Together with the approved design of the playground, called Magical Spaces, these tables will be the beginning to other projects to change the reality of lunch recess here at school. Playgrounds are supposed to be fun, not breeding grounds for fights. Making the playground more kid-friendly can only help our students to grow developmentally, too. A variety of activities offered at recess will make happier children, as they will have choices other than jumping rope, playing basketball or running around every day. Not all kids are good at sports, and offering chess at lunch will help in both thinking skills and self-esteem. Hopefully this will carry through to academic and behavioral success in the classroom. And the chess playing can teach the students valuable problem-solving skills needed for life. The local playground has offered to donate two tables and two more would enable us to offer activities to sixteen potential chess champions at a time. Help us help them, please!

Not being allowed to go to the local municipal playground because of the danger there from drugs and unsavory people, my students have no space outside where they can do what kids are supposed to do - play.

The four hundred students at our school can all be positively affected by the changes they have planned, our Magical Spaces playground. Our future students hopefully will not know how boring recess was before they arrived and the kids want it, so I know they will take care of it. Win-win!
