High Interest Books Lead to High Achieving Readers

My students need 1-2 copies of each of the 19 books nominated for the Rebecca Caudill Award, which is voted on each February by students in Illinois.

My Students

Over the past 2 years, some of the books that have caught my students' attention most and turned them into students who love to read have been books nominated for the Rebecca Caudill Award. Please help me continue opening their eyes to new and exciting books!

I teach sixth grade in the Midwest.

Our school is in an area of moderate poverty, which means some of my students do not have access to quality literature at home and are unable to purchase their own books. Because of this, I know how critical it is for me to update my classroom library frequently. My school district knows how important it is to produce students who have a love of reading. In order to accomplish this, we are trying to find and use high interest materials across the curriculum and across reading levels.

My Project

Over the past few years, I have watched my students fall in love with specific books, authors, and genres, and I've seen how they are able to analyze the authors and styles they love and apply it to our writer's workshop. The books I have requested are all nominees for the Rebecca Caudill Award, an Illinois book award. Only students who have read at least three of the nominees may vote on the winner of the award. I usually read one or two of the books as read alouds, which tend to be my students' favorite time of the day. The books are also used during independent reading and to help students complete the school's genre study, which culminates in a celebration field trip!

Since my school has 7 sections of sixth grade, students often have to be put on a waiting list to check out the Rebecca Caudill nominees from the learning center.

Your donation could help my students have access to high quality, high interest literature on a daily basis!
