Outdoor Laboratory; Elementary Educational Garden

My students need garden hand tools to work in the garden, a butterfly cage, books for learning about plants composting, and two composters.

My Students

Most children learn now, by sitting at their desks and listening to a teacher, pencil in hand. By creating an outdoor laboratory of native and colorful plants, they'll be learning not only about plants but about ecosystems, weather, climate, life-cycles and so much more.

Our students are in grades K-8, and most live along a river.

Though they live right next to some of the most beautiful scenery New Jersey has to offer, they rarely get their hands dirty, and can't identify native plants and animals. They are some of the smartest children I have ever met. I know that many of them are craving a way to get outside and continue learning.

My Project

Having hand tools and garden tools will help the student's to be able to plant the seeds that we will have and tend to the garden, thus being able to witness life-cycles and be more involved in the process. The butterfly cage will benefit those that are creating a butterfly garden by being able to see the types of butterflies that will be around every day at school. The composters will be very important as we're doing a vermi-compost project (with worms) with all of their spare food from lunches that can be compostable so they can see the process. Books that we need will help us to make the garden even better, and will be an awesome resource for both students and teachers combined.

Our school has the makings to enhance student learning outside the classroom as much as it does inside.

A curriculum-based school garden could serve as a living laboratory and outdoor classroom for subjects across the curriculum right in your own schoolyard. Plant-based activities, gardening, and environmental studies provide great opportunities for implementing National and State Science Education Standards.
