Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are struggling readers and experience challenges such as dyslexia, reading disabilities and comprehension challenges. Yet, they have formed and maintained an extracurricular book club for over a year. They are indeed the Dream Team.

These students are high school students who attend a high needs school in a remote district.

The town does not offer a public library, movie theater, or entertainment for adolescents. Over 76% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunches. 100% of the students in the Dream Team book club struggle with reading due to a variety of learning challenges. Yet, they formed this book club and maintained it successfully for a year. They have signed up for the upcoming school year and will meet twice weekly outside of school hours and during lunches. They fundraiser to earn money for an annual Spring Break trip to fully fund all books and field trips. This team faces challenges not only in reading, but also in limited life experiences which hampers their use of background knowledge when reading.

My Project

For most of my students, books are not a luxury they receive and book ownership and building a personal library has become a point of pride for them. Participating in an extracurricular book club offers an opportunity to become a member of an elite school club and improve their self esteem in an area that previously presented shame and frustration. Students who openly professed to hate reading are now proudly members of a book club. They choose the book to read and the club meets to discuss readings during their lunch break while the reading is done outside of school on their time. My students need 30 Dear John books to read during their book club. Reading for pleasure is a new concept for many and still presents challenges, but their attitudes regarding reading are changing.

For students who struggle with reading the effects are far-reaching.

There is so much shame and self-esteem issues attached that by the time they get to high school they present multiple challenges. Changing their attitudes about reading and supporting them in discovering the pleasure behind reading self-selected books is the beginning. For many, the book they read in this book club will be the first book they have read and the pride they feel is life-changing.
