Look What I Can Do By Myself! Independent Literacy Centers

My Students

My challenge for next year is teaching reading groups to 22 active, playful kindergarteners. While I am meeting with a small group, the other students should be engaged in meaningful literacy activities that will challenge them at their level.

My students come from varied backgrounds in a suburban school in Virginia.

I have students who have attended pre-school for years and other students for whom this is their first group experience. Students also vary in their kindergarten readiness. Some come knowing how to read and others are just learning the alphabet for the first time. Our Title-I school provides additional support for lower achieving students because of our moderate poverty area but many students lack resources at home like books and quality games to reinforce these skills. They need as much meaningful practice in school to make up for potentially lost experiences at home.

My Project

In our classroom, I will need meaningful, fun activities that 5 year-old kindergarteners can work on independently. These activities need to be self checking so that the child can get immediate feedback on their knowledge. These quality activities will last from year to year so many groups of students will benefit. When my students leave at the end of the year with mastery of letter sounds, vowels, blends, and sight words they will be well prepared for first grade. They will have a feeling of success in reading due to your contribution of quality games and activities. Thank you for setting the foundation for reading and making learning fun!

I want to know that my students are engaged in meaningful literacy centers, so I can give my small reading groups my attention and focus and provide differentiated instruction in reading.
