This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each year in Texas our students face the fifth grade Science TAKS. This year the lowest test scores fell in the Earth Science Objective. This grant will assist in raising these scores in a fun and interactive way.
My students are come from one of the largest urban cities in Texas and from low economic environment.
Their nights are spent dealing with shootings, taking care of siblings, and wondering what they will have for dinner. For these reasons I make learning fun with activities that broaden their minds while having a good time. Learning in Science does not have to be by the book. It should be getting your hands dirty, and creating artifacts the help you learn.
My Project
These centers and the DVDs will be a part of lessons that do just that. The students will start with the group centers, watch the DVDs then create art work to that will bring all the objectives together. The learning centers explain the themes in a manner that are at the students level while the DVDs bring animal life to the classrooms that has not been seen before. Add to this the student creation of a say a brochure and the learning will stay with them longer than just reading it in a book.
Imagine going into a classroom where all students are engaged.
Not just the smart ones and the ones that can read, but every student no matter their learning style. That is what you will give my students by funding this project. The best part about it is this package will be used for years to come, thus giving hundreds of children a creative and out side the box classroom on an objective that currently performing low.
