My Students

Have you ever felt like you were coming out of your skin? My students often feel this way and seek the calming sensory input of a swing in our room that is mounted in the ceiling. The only thing is the swing is not safe because it is close to a wall.

My students are little guys with autism.

I have kids from Kindergarten to 2nd grade. We are an elementary school in a district with budget woes. There are five little guys in my room and they are amazing! I have the greatest students and want to be able to give them every resource to help them succeed. Autism is a barrier, not a blockade, and this swing helps them get past some of the things they find in their way. They cannot afford to give us the mat to help my kids use the sensory swing safely.

My Project

The 4 foot by 6 foot mat is squishy and safe. It is treated with an antibacterial agent which means an extra layer of protection for my students. The sensory swing helps my students calm and, quite literally, find themselves in their physical space. This helps them prepare to learn and learn effectively.

This project is really important to our room because the piece of equipment that would really help our students is not being used because I do not feel it is safe without the nearby wall being a softer place to land.
