This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are currently sleeping on mats that are older than they are. These poor old mats have suffered through countless bathroom accidents and other bodily fluid spills. We scrub them often but the mold and mildew gets the best of them year after year. They can't take another year of this abuse.

My school is a very small, unnoticed school in the middle of a less desired part of town.

My students come from low S.E.S. households. Some are in foster care while others probably need to be. Parents have very poor education and do not have high expectations for their children. This is where I come in. I set the bar high and teach my students to reach for the stars. I show them how to believe in themselves and encourage them to want to achieve. My students enjoy coming to school to learn and their parents are surprised to see their enthusiasm.

My Project

Many of my four-year-old students are sharing sleeping on the floor of their apartment with their many other siblings. They often come to school restless and unable to concentrate due to sleep deprivation. My Pre-K program offers them the opportunity to get a nice much needed rest time at school. Unfortunately, the mats that we currently have are filthy and prevent the students from resting peacefully. Some students have to sleep on the carpet because we are short some mats that we had to dispose of due to cleanliness concerns. I have children falling asleep at their seats eagerly awaiting rest time so that they can catch up from the lack of a good nights rest.

New mats in our classroom would mean that my students can get the rest that they deserve so that they can focus their attention on learning!
