Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students are surrounded by a world filled with phenomena they do not understand and often take for granted. The goal of the "What Is The Matter With Matter" unit is to allow for greater hands-on exploration and appreciation for the non-living environment.

My school is an urban high school with grades ranging from 6th to 12th.

Students are low income and low performing, but are excited by science lab activities that allow for manipulation of lab equipment, making metric measurements, observing chemical reactions, and collecting data. Class sizes average 30 students per class, so in my science classes they work in seven groups of from 4 to 5. reading scores are about 3 grade levels below average and laboratory experiments provide my students opportunities to acquire concepts, skills, and knowledge beyond their comprehension of the textbook. These experiences also enhance and clarify their reading materials. Writing practice is provided through the writing of lab reports, which follow the steps in the scientific method. Not only do they write formal reports, but they design charts and graphs, make labeled diagrams, do calculations from their measurements, and use higher order thinking skills to analyze and interpret the data they collect

My Project

Students will utilize electrical circuitry equipment to set up a series circuit and ring a bell. For the first time they will observe and comprehend how charges can move from one place to another and what types of materials conduct a current. The thermometers and stop watches will allow for the observation of the transfer of heat energy and the direction of energy flow. The thermometers and test tubes will provide for determination of freezing and boiling points of matter. All of the requested lab equipment will make nebulous, abstract concepts, tangible and observable. They will also serve to excite students about science by taking it out of the textbook and bringing it into the real world.

My students come to me with poor attitudes toward learning and poor work and study habits, in addition to deficit skills.

I must teach them science while turning them on to learning and teaching them appropriate work and study habits. I have experienced success in all of these areas by teaching a lab driven science curriculum. unfortunately, I'm at a school with little or no science lab equipment or materials. The generosity of donors will get students excited and interested in learning.
