My Students

Do you remember a book you read as a child that you couldn't seem to put down? Children today are so often distracted by other things - TV, video games, computers - that sometimes they do not take the time to discover the magic of books.

I teach a class of 26 fourth graders at a public school in southern Louisiana.

I teach all subjects to the same children all day. Our class is comprised of both regular education and special education students. One of my personal favorite things to do is to teach my students to love reading.

My Project

Our class loves to spend time reading novels as part of the language arts curriculum. Rather than just reading from our textbook, I like to switch it up sometimes and read a full novel. One of our favorites that we read every year is "The Castle in the Attic" by Elizabeth Winthrop. During this story we are able to talk about medieval times, including knights, castles, and chivalry. The students even bring in recycled items and build their own castles at the end of the unit! The problem is that we do not have a class set of these books. I can only read aloud my one copy to them. For many of my students, it is hard for them to follow along with me and stay focused without the book. This also makes it difficult to assign activities and tests from the book since they do not have their own copies. We also like to use reading circles and learning stations sometimes, and without a class set of the book, this is impossible.

Your donation could ensure that my students have access to this wonderful, magical book for years to come!

Your help will ensure that my students continue to discover the excitement and magic of books and reading! It is during these important early developmental years that many of them become lifelong readers. Maybe they will even remember this one as the first book they couldn't put down!
