The World Right on Our Floor!

My students need a carpet showing the 7 continents of the world.

My Students

We want to see the world at a glance. In third grade we study communities around the world. We travel to Puerto Rico, China, Africa... A classroom rug displaying the 7 continents would allow my students to jump from continent to continent fully visualizing their world.

Third graders are amazing people!

They are still motivated to learn and love active participation. Our school is in a high poverty small city school district. Many of my students struggle with school. By providing them with opportunities to actively participate with hands-on materials that meet multiple learning styles, they are motivated to achieve. My students love to sing, dance, and move around as they learn. They sing songs about the parts of a friendly letter, the water cycle, the multiples, and yes, the 7 continents song. They are eager to learn in a safe happy environment where they are comfortable to take risks, are encouraged to do their best, and allowed to explore and get involved in their own learning.

My Project

Our third grade social studies curriculum includes learning about different communities around the world. We travel to Puerto Rico, China, Africa, etc. I am requesting a large carpet displaying the 7 continents of the world that my students will sit on each day. We start each day with morning greeting in a circle on the floor. Each child is greeted by their classmates and feels like a connected part of the group. We also go over our schedule for the day and do some warm-up activities. They would love the opportunity to sit on a carpet displaying the 7 continents of the world, which could be added to our morning warm-ups. We would also use the map as we travel from community to community learning about children like themselves living all around the globe. The carpet would provide them with a great visual and interactive tool to help them better understand the relationship between the various places that we visit.

I taught 5th grade for ten years and was amazed that my students didn't know what city, state, or country they lived in let alone what continent or the other continents of the world.

It is so important for them to learn about their communities, as well as world communities and their place in the world. This carpet would be a daily visual aid that students could actively use to develop some map skills and help them to learn about the globe and where in the world they are!
