Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching our students to think globally is difficult especially when they don't know much about their own country.

I teach a vibrant group of fourth graders who come from a variety of backgrounds.

We are a school with a lot of diversity and a high ELL population. Many of these students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and haven't had the experiences of traveling around the United States. These students also thrive with anything hands-on and they love to explore new topics and ideas.

My Project

The carpet of the United States will provide our class with many opportunities. We have pen pals from around the United States that we write to throughout the year. When we first introduce the project it is difficult for all the students to view our map at once. With this carpet, everyone would have the chance to see where their pen pal is from and compare it to where we live. We also come across references to the states in our daily readings. The class is fascinated with where things are located and this carpet would be an easy reference. Not only will this carpet help 4th graders learn the 50 states, it will also show them the surrounding oceans, preparing them to be successful in 5th grade.

This carpet will give all students an opportunity to learn about the country in which we live.

It will especially help our ELL and EC students who have a difficult time using an atlas to locate the states and other points of interest. It is a quick reference and something that will also bring comfort to our daily Morning Meeting spot. Our students will be well on their way to becoming globally aware learners!
