I teach Journalism at a very large urban high school. We serve a Latino immigrant population in a neighborhood of Los Angeles that is rich in history and culture, but also low income and high crime. I have been teaching for seven years and just completed my second year teaching Journalism, which I love. We have revived a newspaper that had only come out a few times in the past few years and turned it into a monthly showcase of student writing and photography that the whole community feels proud of. I have already had a number of students go on to college to study journalism at schools like UC Berkeley, Cal State Fullerton, and CSUN. This year alone, five students out of twenty graduated with the intention of pursuing a higher degree in journalism. The field of journalism is changing, and the high school press needs to change with it. I see one of my primary duties as preparing my students to compete for jobs in a field that is being turned upside down by new technologies. At every conference and lecture I attend on the state of journalism, the speakers always say that reporters need to have multimedia skills. Of course they need to be able to write well and always will, but to excel in the future, all reporters will need to be able to work with video, photography, and audio, and to use them all on the internet. I am still working to build up a program from scratch, so I do not have the equipment I need. We do have some computers, so we have starting blogging and using InDesign to layout the paper. However, we do not have the audio/video equipment to add multimedia to our website. I want the students to produce audio slide shows that will grab the reader's interest and deepen their understanding of a story. I want them to produce short radio pieces that they can post online to accompany a story. This is the way the professional media is going, and I want my students to be there with them, to be a voice of diversity in a field that often doesn't hear their voice. I need to purchase one high-quality digital voice recorder and microphone that students can check out for interviews. They will then be able to import and edit the audio on the computers that we already have in the classroom. They need to be high quality so that they will withstand intense use and will produce high-quality audio that we can proudly post on the internet. I am very confident that this would have a huge impact on the quality of the school newspaper's website. I am also sure that the students will enjoy doing their stories that much more.
