My Students

Imagine being the only ones of your kind around. Our small school is the only one of our size in our area that has a band program. Then have your snare drum be 20 years old and sound bright and tinny during a soft dark piece.

Our school is a very small rural school.

Our class population is high poverty (60% free/reduced lunch). Most of our students come from dairy farms and have to find practice time between school, other activities, and chores at home. Although we are a small school, we are proud of our heritage. There are four other class 1A schools in our county, but we are the only one with a band program. This school had a great tradition in the 80s and 90s of going to the state band contest and doing very well. We hope to build our program back up to that point.

My Project

As a very small school in a rural area, our funds are very limited. The fact that we have a band program at all is surprise to many people. We are one of four small class A schools in our county, and the only one with a music program. With limited funds, however, comes limited purchase of musical instruments. Our current concert snare drum is older than me and has a tendency to sound very bright. Our sixth grade band received negative comments about our percussion during an outdoor festival this year because of the way the instrument sounds.

A new snare drum will help our band program sound their best and help us compete with the bigger schools at music festivals.

We need to add more instruments to build our band program back up to the standards of fifteen years ago. The students are willing, but the instruments just cannot keep up with their desire. We need your help to make sure that these small town students can still do big things, and enjoy a quality music education program.
