Award Winning Literature Circles

My students need 8 copies each of 8 high interest, award-winning, contemporary novels to choose from for their literature circles.

My Students

What's the secret to reader engagement? Choice, of course! During literature circles, groups of 4 choose a book title to read, plan their reading schedule, and facilitate their own discussion. All my 8th graders need is a framework, teacher support and, of course, great titles to choose from.

My 8th graders are, like most middle school students, part enthusiastic kid and part sullen teenager.

Tapping into their enthusiasm is my daily challenge. Our school is suburban and our population comes from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. We are working hard at Creekside to foster reader identity for all students. Love of reading is slowly becoming a part of our school culture!

My Project

Helping foster a love of reading is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Usually all it takes is falling in love with one book to change a student's mind about reading. That "one" book is, however, different for different kids. The award winning titles I have chosen purposely reflect a variety of interests. Some titles include Monster, by Walter Dean Meyers, which is the emotionally gritty story of Steve, a 16 year-old boy convicted of murder. Charles and Emma by Deborah Heiligmen is a more factual, yet fascinating tale, of Charles Darwin and his religious love interest, Emma. Young Ju, a Korean immigrant to California, is the main character in A Step From Heaven, by An Na. Marcelo in the Real World deals with autism, and The White Darkness is a female adventure story in Antarctica. For Sci Fi fans there is House of the Scorpion, a futuristic story of a young boy trying to escape his destiny as the clone of a powerful dictator. These are just some of the titles!

Presented with engaging titles like these, students will be able to choose a novel that resonates with them and then work together in a group setting to read, analyze and discuss.

Students will take turns functioning in different capacities in the group, and take ownership of their learning in a powerful way.
