My Students

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" - Martin Luther King, Jr. This is a crucial message for everyone, and I wish for my students to dream big each and every day.

My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

The diversity is incredible! These kids are eager, enthusiastic, and wonderfully kind to one another. They are not afraid to share their stories, and listen to the experiences of others with open minds. The cultural diversity in my room has enriched the curriculum so much this year.

My Project

My students deserve a stellar unit on diversity. As the cornerstone, I want to create a solid curriculum around the book, "The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963" by Christopher Paul Curtis. This novel is also the winner of the Newbery Honor and the Coretta Scott King Award. This is one of my favorite books, and it tackles a dark time in history with character, humor, and solemn honesty (and the students love it). To add meaningful context, I also want to teach the students about heroes of the Civil Rights Movement, and expose them to compelling true stories, poems, and literature. As a culminating activity, the students will create posters celebrating themselves, their strengths, and their backgrounds. I wish for my classroom to be a place where we celebrate each other and the unique qualities we can bring to the school, and ultimately the world!

Despite facing many personal obstacles, my diverse students are kind, enthusiastic and eager to learn.

They deserve a stellar unit on an important time in history. The ultimate goal will be to continue to celebrate diversity in our classmates!
