My Students

Being an English language learner can be difficult when you are in a new country. Children often feel alone, lost, and homesick. Many have left family and friends behind, only to find that no one in their class speaks their language.

My students come from all over the world.

Some come from India, Russia, China, and Columbia. They are bright, sensitive children who are thirsty for knowledge, and are having a hard time learning because of the language barrier. Middle school is challenging; it is a time of physical and social changes. However, my students are persevering in a nurturing educational environment. Here, my students' learning becomes meaningful when they complete hands-on activities.

My Project

My multi-cultural classroom comes alive when my students have the opportunity to see and hear themselves during the learning process. One project that I really would love to facilitate with my students is a writing activity, where students write a fictional play using a math related theme. The characters and setting will be based on their countries. Students will create puppets, and perform their plays for their classmates. I will video them as they perform and practice their English. A microphone and speaker will help them project their voices. We will invite their parents to witness their children's learning and social experiences. If we can receive these resources, my students will experience pride as they share their creativity and math knowledge. These types of activities will strengthen students now and in the future for years to come.

Please support this project.

There is so much to learn and experience, and with the generosity of caring donors, my students will flourish and live the American Dream. My students try so hard to speak English, and I have found the use of a video or microphone to be just magical when students have the opportunity to speak into these objects. I believe that visual and audio feedback will encourage all of my students to blossom.
