Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It may be hard to imagine just trying to make it from one day to the next, surviving until the next meal, fighting your way till the end of the school day, pushing forward and collapsing at night from exhaustion, only to have to do the exact same thing the next day.

But that's the life some of our students have.

Parents work two and three jobs, odd hours, for little pay, and their children are raising themselves. Title 1 and SES are codewords that don't even come close to describing the lives our students live. Though our parents truly love their kids, love doesn't do homework or cook supper, love doesn't read bedtime stories, and love doesn't pay light bills. Parents don't know when or how to support their children's academic growth, and that's where Parent University comes in. Parent University is a training program that puts parents in the know of how to use academic vocabulary in everyday conversation, how to read a bedtime story, how to be enthusiastic about learning, and how to see learning as fun. The parent training program is one night a month and provides a positive learning environment in which parents are become empowered, successful, and proud.

My Project

Busy families have requested calendars with the entire year's Parent University dates marked. Parents can put the magnetic calendars on the refrigerator, can plan work schedules, babysitting, or dinner ahead of time, and can attend that month's Parent University. Students whose parents attended last year's Parent University had shown decreased behavior problems, increased motivation, higher levels of learning, and improved reading scores. There are numerous benefits to providing this learning opportunity to parents and children. However, our school cannot be successful or effective if parents do not participate. Traditionally we have low parent participation in all events, and hopefully with a strategy as simple as putting a magnetic calendar on the refrigerator will help overwhelmed and busy families become accustomed to stepping outside daily survival into planning ahead.

Education is the solution.

It is the way out of poverty. It is the means by which we break the cycle. Last year we were able to help about 20 families. This year we anticipate being able to help hundreds of families. When the parents participate in school, their children see learning as important and worthwhile and work harder themselves. Furthermore, parents receive a great sense of accomplishment and pride when at the end of the program they walk across the stage in their graduation ceremony.
