My Students
Reading difficulties make learning in school and success in school almost impossible. It is a struggle to get students with these problems to even try when they have become so discouraged over their own inabilities.
I get to teach some great kids!
These kids are ones who have struggled in school and usually in other areas of their lives as well. Some have come close to giving up on school, some have low self-esteem, others come from low income families or dysfunctional families, and most have some combination of these disadvantages. Still, others are struggling to just learn the English language. They want to be successful in school and life. If you could spend time with them the way that I get to, then you would know that this is true. The lack of some skills, however, hinders their hopes.
My Project
Something that plays an important role in helping these students is to provide educational opportunities that ensure success and then build to larger steps. Books and reading are paramount to this. This grant will provide several copies of a U.S. History textbook that is on a reading level that struggling readers will work with. You see, many of the students that I have described will look at a standard textbook, feel daunted by the looks of the page, and then just give up. However, if we can start the year with something closer to their level they will read and feel successful. Then, we can take that motion and build to success at a higher level.
It would be ideal for all kids to come into high school reading at the proper grade level.
We can lament that this is not the reality, but I choose to try and do something about it. You can know that these special kids have another chance to be successful and encouraged in school. You can know that these kids will be touched by the fact that someone cared enough to provide new books for them. You can know that you did something about the problem. Thank you.
