My Students

My students come from a high poverty community and are in a neighborhood school. They are also elite members of the school as comprehensive gifted students. We are lucky enough to have a projector and an interactive whiteboard, but are working off a computer with a disk drive!

My students are an inquisitive bunch and they love learning especially when technology is involved.

Our math lessons are all used with the interactive whiteboard, but I imagine the possibilities when I can have them create presentations, reflect on a online learning activity, and engage in the world available with a fast running computer. My students have been the recipients of awards for attendance and test scores in our area all while facing daily challenges in their homes and neighborhood, yet they preserver. They continue to rise above the challenges and I want to give them the best education possible. I am so proud of what they have done so far, but I think they can manage even greater things with a few more tools. Donors on this site have been so very generous to our class in the past and my students have been so appreciative.

My Project

Right now we are dealing with an OLD laptop with a hard drive! It has no CD/DVD access and I am crippled by the slowness as well as the lack of memory. I cannot load interesting or interactive sites that require plug-ins because the computer is just not able to hold the programs. I have had to save files to a jump drive this year to just allow the basic functions for the interactive whiteboard to work. With a new computer the ability to load interactive materials, download programs for the whiteboard to allow for children to interact will be fast and efficient. The computer with the CD and DVD drive will also allow use to burn copies of our projects and share them with community, family, and friends.

I want to spend as much time as I can working with students and bringing them the most interesting and engaging activities.

I am spending so much time "waiting" on the old computer it is slowing down our learning. Please bring us up to speed!
