My Students

We love to read, and it shows! The children in our school are ready to read books of all genres in small groups. They want to move beyond the basal reading book and into chapter books, and nonfiction books. We don't have any book sets to satisfy this need.

Our public school serves children in grades K-3.

We have a poverty rate of 63%, so many of them do not have reading materials in their homes. They are becoming voracious readers, ready to move beyond the textbook. They want to read about many topics, and share the stories with friends. They are involved with the Accelerated Reader program, and are becoming interested in all kinds of genres.

My Project

I have requested 13 different books in 6-books sets, some fiction and some non-fiction. I am the school district Title I Director, so I am requesting these materials on behalf of our K-3 teachers. We have 4 classes each of grades K-3 in our school, and all of the grade level teachers will be able to access these book sets. The teachers in our school will be able to share the book sets, passing them around to each classroom to use in small groups, and in this way will enhance the reading experiences of many children. These book sets will enable teachers to differentiate their reading instruction, meeting the needs of all levels of readers. This will allow children to read a book with a small group, then discuss the book with the teacher. The groups will then be able to apply their reading skills to the book, showing that they have truly become independent readers.

This project, when funded, will allow students to read books at their level, fostering independence and a love of reading.

Students will be able to discuss their books, and the ideas they've gleaned from the books, with their peers. Students will widen their reading interests, and will be exposed to several genres. We will be able to use the books year after year, so the impact of the project will continue for several years.
