Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in our metropolitan area. Because of the high rates of poverty, many have not traveled outside of the city limits. This project will connect them with students in other schools, other states, and other countries.

Students in my school come from many different cultures.

The three main groups are Hmong refugees, Mexican immigrants, and African-Americans. Over 40% of students come from a home where English is not the predominate language. Although they come from far away, they themselves often do not travel much.

My Project

I am requesting a webcam to allow us to video conference with classes in other areas. I have already done some work with a class across the country. I have had to use my personal webcam for this. That webcam is not adequate and not flexible enough to use with a whole class (it's stationary and does not move). The equipment I'm requesting is larger, sturdier, and is allows for movement of the camera, to capture the whole class. I am also requesting a digital video camera, and tripod, so that students can make videos about our school to share with others. These projects will help students with vocabulary and concept development. By using video contacts with outside schools, this will help them expand their understanding of geography, and culture. By video taping their own school, they are improving their ability to describe and explain.

This project has the potential to open the windows of the world to these students.

They are already so happy with what we have done, we just need better equipment to help make it a smoother and more effective process.
