My Students

As graphic design expands into the curriculum of my art classes, students may miss the tactile immediacy of traditional art-making. Making art with the computer may appeal to them more when they can hold a printed copy of their graphic work, in full color. We can also make books and posters.

My students are from a rural area in Arkansas.

They attend a small high school in a 100% free lunch district. We are also a 1-to-1 school, in which each student has an assigned laptop. Our district is pulling determinedly out of academic distress, and we are concentrating more and more on teaching the 21st century skills to give our fine students a fair chance in their post-school world.

My Project

Graphic Design is going to be a major part of my upper-level art curriculum this upcoming school year. I have been familiarizing my students already with the good graphics programs we already have, so we should be ready to go much further next year. A color printer in my classroom would be a tremendous asset for making the computer generated art more "real." Also, we will be able to make books (using graphics and layout programs we already have), make brochures and small posters, and print out business cards and stationery designs. A color printer in my classroom will give students the immediate tangible results they want from their art, and it will engage them more in the design curriculum.

We have a good bit of technology in our schools.

In my art class, I want students to explore the possibilities of this technology through design studies. With up-to-date laptops, industry-standard graphics programs and the fluidity of digital pen tablets (thanks to donorschoose!), a high-quality color printer will round out the equipment and allow students to not only meet their potential, but surge past.
