The Blogosphere - Writers Communicate With the World

My students need a reliable Lenovo ThinkPad computer in our classroom to participate in our classroom blog project.

My Students

Having someone else read your writing is an exciting prospect, isn't it? My students have been publishing pieces to Class Blogmeister for nearly the entire school year. We have a small lab in our school that our class has access to only one hour per week.

Room 145 contains an wonderful group of young people.

We are students from many different ethnic backgrounds and family structures. We have gotten to know each other much better through our blogs. As their teacher (although I consider myself a student too) I have read their stories and caught glimpses of a sense of humor or concerns that I have not seen in the classroom. To share a bit about our school, I would like to say that it is unique in many ways. We have looping teams, which means that the teachers spend two years with a group of students. We are also a Comer School and follow the principals set in place by James Comer. Because our school is considered a high poverty school, we provide many of the basics such as breakfast everyday. In the summer students can come to our building for a free lunch program. We have a very small turn over of staff. Once you are at our school you know why. Even those that retire come back frequently to enjoy our amazing school.

My Project

My students are constantly asking, "Can I go on the blog?" Well, they were asking a great deal when our old hand me down laptop was working better. Now it has become more frustrating than fun to blog in our classroom. I envision a center in our classroom with a reliable laptop or two. Students would be able to rotate to this as a center during our literacy block. Our literacy block has many components for reading and writing. Writer's workshop would be so cool with a Blogging Center! As I mentioned many of my students view the blog as a way to express themselves on a variety of levels. They love to share their adventures. Sometimes they share concerns they have. All blogs are forwarded to me before they are published to the web so if there is anything that is not appropriate for a student to share, I can handle that matter in a more private manner. Overall, I have seen changes in my students from my most advanced to my more struggling students. They have a voice!

Teaching is being involved in the lives of young people.

It is about opening doors for them and stepping aside and then letting them step forward on their own. I think blogging and writing does this for many of my students. They are nervous about sharing their thoughts, dreams, and fears with others. However, when you put a small piece out on the blog and someone writes back, something as simple as "Good Job!" you swell with pride. You try a longer piece. Writing grows on you!
