My Students

My school is in a rural county that is struggling financially.

Many of my students have part-time jobs to help support their families. In addition, many of them have not been exposed to books that they might actually enjoy. As a result, they see reading as something that wastes time they could be using to do something more worthwhile.

My Project

I am requesting books for my classroom library about real people who have faced real challenges. The people in these stories come from a variety of cultures, times, and nations. I can offer these books to my resistant readers, who tend to have a very practical mindset.

Reading these stories will help my students see that "literature" applies to real life, too.

Research shows that when students find books that they enjoy, they are more likely to read beyond what's required, and they are more likely to pick up another book after they finish. Help me break these walls of resistance. Help me share the joy of reading!
