My Students

Do you remember a favorite teacher? I bet you can even remember some of the fun and exciting ways that she motivated you to learn and do your best. My guess is that she organized her classroom and her teaching in such a way that you and your friends "wanted" to do what was asked of you.

My students live in a very poverty-stricken area of Indiana.

Our local community has been hit very hard by the economy and our students are suffering. Many families have lost jobs, due to our local factories closing and our school corporation is cutting teachers and resources. These children have a lot of stress factors when they go home in the afternoon.

My Project

With this MP3 player, I will be able to enhance these children's lives through music. I've already compiled the CD of songs that will motivate them; however, due to the time that it takes to load the CD and start the program on the computer, the necessary effect in the classroom is lost. With an MP3 Player, the music will be ready at a moment's notice and will be a vital resource to engage and motivate, as well as prompt the children throughout the day. With this resource, I will play uplifting music to set the mood in the morning, such as "Zippity Do Dah," "RESPECT," and "That's What Friends Are For." Then, throughout the day when they are supposed to live up, I'll play "Move." At the end of the day, I'll play "Workin' 9-5," as a cue to do Thier afternoon jobs. Each event throughout the day will have a 1-2 minute song affiliated with it, so the children will know what to do. They may dance and move during the song; however, they must stop and be finished when the song ends.

When you think of that special teacher, I'm certain that she had a significant way of making you feel special and a way of making the day more fun.

This is my way. I know that brain research confirms that music will enhance their learning.
