My Students

My school put on a musical this year: Seussical Jr! It was an incredible performance. The kids did wonderfully, and the material was top-notch. Unfortunately, when the popularity of the show inspired my kids to want to read books by Dr. Seuss, I realized how little of his collection I owned.

I work in a suburban school in which a high number of students are ELL, and an even higher percentage receive free and reduced meals.

These are wonderful children with caring families, but unfortunately due to their environment, a great deal of my school's students are severely under-stimulated, and many of them are terribly behind on their language acquisition.

My Project

It wasn't until after our school's musical that it hit me: what better way to inspire my students than Dr. Seuss? After all, has there ever been a more imaginative children's author? How many people, young and old, have been influenced by Horton Hears A Who, the Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, or Oh, the Places You'll Go? And the language he uses! How do you begin to describe how wonderful and clever his rhyme schemes are?

Dr. Seuss wrote so many incredible books, and they have inspired millions of people.

I want that for my students. I want them to discover how fun reading can be, how great it can be to use your imagination in ways you never thought possible, and I want them to experience the lessons Seuss wrote about; how they're capable of anything they can think of, how precious our environment is, and how a person is a person, no matter how small. These books can help achieve that goal.
